I have managed to get the KML file to view in Google Earth, but have not managed to see it in 3D yet.....

From Google's Help: The best way to take control of your 3D viewing of Google Earth is to use the middle mouse button. Click and hold the middle button and watch how you can pan and tilt around any view. Another tip is to hold down the SHIFT key while doing this and making circular motions to pan at a fixed tilt.

I'm using a laptop so don't have a 'middle button'.

Maybe I have seen it in 3D, but due to it being relatively flat round here didn't notice

Just hold down shift and left click drag the mousepad.
